Slow lies: Response delays promote perceptions of insincerity.

چکیده
Evaluating other people's sincerity is a ubiquitous and important part of social interactions. Fourteen experiments (total N = 7,565; 10 preregistered; 11 in the main article, three online supplemental materials; with U.S. American British members public, French students) show that response speed an cue on which people base their inferences. Specifically, systematically judged slower (vs. faster) responses as less sincere for range scenarios from trivial daily conversations to high stakes situations such police interrogations. Our findings suggest this because are perceived be result responder suppressing automatic, truthful thoughts, fabricating novel answer. People also seem have rich lay theory speed, takes into account variety situational factors. For instance, effect delay smaller if socially undesirable, or it can attributed mental effort. Finally, we showed explicit instructions ignore reduce judgments sincerity. not only help ascertain role interpersonal inference making processes, but carry practical implication. In particular, present study highlights potential effects may observed judicial settings, innocent suspects mislead judge them insincere hence guilty. The inaccuracy and insincerity of real faces
An avatar who’s behavior is unbelievable or easily misinterpreted will be an inefficient and possibly counterproductive conversational partner. Here, we psychophysically determined how recognizable and believable several real expressions were. In general, there is systematic confusion between particular expressions. Critically, even these real facial expressions were not always understood or be...
متن کاملEstimation of FMRI response delays.
We present an efficient algorithm using the Hilbert Transform for estimating the delay of the BOLD response to neuronal stimulation. With minimal additional computations, the algorithm estimates parameters generated in the widely used cross-correlation method and simplifies the interpolation required to estimate the response delay from the cross-correlation function. We examined errors in the H...
متن کاملLies, damned lies and……….
The well-known quotation “There are lies, damned lies and statistics” suggests that statistics doesn’t have the greatest of reputations. Why is this? Certainly, statistics can be used to mislead, but logically “lies, damned lies and statistics” reflects high levels of statistical misunderstanding rather than indicating that statistics are inherently ‘bad’. In Bad Science, Ben Goldacre highlight...
متن کاملEarly Anticipation Lies behind the Speed of Response in Conversation
RTs in conversation, with average gaps of 200 msec and often less, beat standard RTs, despite the complexity of response and the lag in speech production (600 msec or more). This can only be achieved by anticipation of timing and content of turns in conversation, about which little is known. Using EEG and an experimental task with conversational stimuli, we show that estimation of turn duration...
